The Spanish Flag over Tybee
Island
Spain had claimed the territory that
stretched from Port Royal, South Carolina to St. Augustine, Florida. They
called this land "La Florida." The Spanish flag was the second flag to
fly over Tybee Island.
The embattled caste on the field of
red represented the house of Castille, and the red lion rampant on the
white field represented Leon. This Spanish flag of Ferdinand and Isabella
reflected the newly united Kingdom of Spain.
