The Women of Irene Mound

Ir45.JPG (78353 bytes)

These women were captured on film two days after Christmas, 1937. We see a woman wearing a kerchief beneath her hat and smoking a pipe, elements of style or culture that have long since disappeared. The woven split oak basket, seen to the right of the women, were made in Savannah especially for this project. The rope stretched in front of the women was put there as a safety measure to help keep visitors from falling into the open, deep trenches.
