A Variety of Tasks at an Excavation

Ir44.JPG (97727 bytes)

This panorama shows the variety of tasks at an excavation. The archaeologist is taking an elevation reading with a surveyor's transit, and all the workers are frozen in place. They don't want to interrupt the line of sight. Toward the center of the photo, as it drops into what look like a big cellar, is most of the excavated funerary building. Behind the archaeologist, two women with a basket wait to carry off dirt. A most disturbing element of this composition is the fact that while everyone seems to be dressed for cold weather, the woman standing by herself in the upper right is barefoot.
