The first few weeks of the excavation were spent clearing thick underbrush and trees, setting up grids, and digging exploratory trenches. This trench is one of the first, and it ran east-west through the site. It is extremely near the River bank. This particular section went through the small village site that surrounded the ceremonial mound.
