Each side was labeled with a compass heading indicating north, south, east, or west. Straightening and adjustments made this a laborious process. One interview subject remembered this about her grandmother's excavation of these burials: "I remember my grandmother saying how sad she felt for those poor people, because they were digging them up like that." While some fully informed their families, other excavators did not tell their children they exhumed human skeletons. Perhaps, as one person suggested, they were trying to protect their children's sensitive feelings.
