The Women of Irene Mound

Ir23.JPG (39755 bytes)

Notice how none of the women wore slacks while working. According to interviewers, it was very unusual for women to wear pants to work, even in conditions such as this. Most of the women also wore hats, many with kerchiefs under them, to protect themselves from the sun. Its interesting to see that many of the men did not wear hats in these photos. The wooden bridge in the lower left spans a deeper trench behind the women. Successive strata were left open to reveal the topography of the site.
