A small dirt road was the only access to Irene Mound, as this photo shows. Before the mound was "rediscovered" by Dolores and Marmaduke Floyd, the heavily wooded area was a convenient source of firewood. This man uses an oxcart to carry his load to town. Note a small square building to the right of the picture, beside the trees that roughly shape a "V". It's an outhouse, and it was the only one at the site.
